Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
What is CERT?
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is a nationally supported, locally implemented initiative. It is a FEMA-backed training program that teaches everyday people basic disaster response skills. This helps you protect yourself and your neighbors when professional responders are not immediately available.
Local CERT programs train and organize teams of volunteers. You will learn practical skills like fire safety, light search and rescue, and medical operations.
- Empowering Everyday People: You gain practical skills to take action when it counts. No professional background is required. Training is open to anyone.
- Free Training: The Basic CERT course provides 24 to 30 hours of classroom instruction and hands-on practice at no cost.
- Recognized Nationwide: Managed by FEMA, Utah CERT volunteers join a nationwide network of trained responders.
- Programs for Everyone: Program formats exist for individuals, teens, workplaces, and college campuses.
What You Will Learn
The Basic CERT course covers the core skills you need to respond safely in the first hours of a disaster. Topics include:
- Disaster Preparedness: Build personal and household emergency plans.
- Disaster Medical Operations: Treat life-threatening injuries and conduct triage.
- Fire Safety and Utility Controls: Suppress small fires and shut off hazardous utilities.
- Light Search and Rescue: Locate and safely assist victims in damaged structures.
- Disaster Psychology: Support the mental well-being of yourself and your neighbors.
Online Training Options
If you cannot attend an in-person program right now, you can start building your skills online. Note: Online training does not replace hands-on practice. You must complete an in-person practical component through your local program to receive certification.
